Nørre Campus

Copenhagen will become a unique knowledge city, using the concept of health as a strong common denominator. The area will be called CopenHealth City, and will exhibit health in a myriad of shapes and configurations.  Here exist the investigative, the curative, preventive, recreational, commercial, the city life and lifestyle-related health.  CopenHealth creates an environment which fosters a healthy and sustainable international knowledge.

North Campus, Rigshospitalet, Panum Institute and the surrounding neighbourhoods will be developed with a common thematic and brand in health – a pioneer project on an urban scale that will set new international standards for healthy, innovative, expansive and vibrant cities.

Basic elements of the project’s first phase have been extended and developed for a project that is visionary and robust enough to cope with future qualification and nuance.  Focusing on the eclectic qualities of architecture in the campus, we identified pockets of program to isolate and uniquely develop.  The central park area in the campus area (Mixingscape) has materialized into a Campus Park and a Campus Centre. The strategic plan is based on a «top down» meets «bottom up» planning strategy, and translates into operational strategies for liquefaction, conversion, synergies between functions and programs, and a stronger campus identity.

CPHC consists of five key development areas, each to be developed in a unique way. The five development areas are interconnected by a single network of connections and public spaces.

The five development areas are subdivided into combined 46 development pockets. These pockets’ borders are defined by their relationships to public spaces that link the five development areas together. Each pocket is sensitively developed as an independent entity, in relation to its function, boundaries and adjoining campus programs.

The plan for CopenHealth City designates 34 specific projects and priorities. The projects are of different importance, size and character, but all contribute to making CPHC a unique collection of knowledge. The projects consist of buildings, infrastructure and outdoor spaces with various programs, potential developers, operators and funding models. The University of Copenhagen, with the various faculties, institutions and urban facilities represented in the various projects, can collaborate to create a town with a vibrant and unique character.
