CINEARTE
Bahia Design District
The Cinearte in Rua Chile was a center piece in the 1930s’ urban life in Salvador, Bahia. Rua Chile was Brazil´s first official planned street and was for many years the center of Brazil until the moving of the capital to Rio de Janeiro. In the 1930s Rua Chile had a big revival and became for years the center of urban life in Salvador. The large transformation and decline of the city center since the ‘80s has left the street and the buildings abandoned.
Our masterplan with Fera Investimentos for Bahia Design District reformulates Rua Chile as the center of urban and cultural life in Salvador. The plan is formed by a series of careful and precise architectural interventions in and around Rua Chile. With Cinearte, Fera Palace Hotel, Fera Lofts, Palacete, Palazzo Sodré, Delicatessen, and Barreiro studios, Rua Chile will once again become the center of urban life in Salvador.
Cinearte
The Cinearte building is a classic example of the Art Deco Architecture typical of the era and of the city of Salvador. Set to be a live venue, night club and arts center, it is a crucial urban and cultural generator at the heart of the “Salvador Art District” transformation strategy.
The great cinema space is transformed into a live venue and night club. Above, a terraced extension makes space for generous exhibition and office spaces. The extension is invisible at street level as it cascades away from the street following the envelope of the neighboring buildings.
The historic façades of the cinema will be recaptured, rebuilt and restored as to adhere to the original design. The proposed façade for the new extension is inspired by the bold graphic characteristics of the classic vertical Art Deco lines of the historic façade.
