NØRREPORT STATION

Invited international competition for new station amenities, plaza, traffic patterns and bike parking for 2 500 bikes, as well as a 10 000 m2 urban plaza.

Nørreport has always been a key meeting point for Copenhagen. It was once the city’s former main entrance «where the peasant, the merchant, the traveler from the north and the Royal would meet”. Nørreport was the place of the most audacious and most public projects; the fortification, the gate, Boulevard and the first place in the city connecting the Regional train, S-trains and Metro. Today Nørreport is the busiest hub in Copenhagen and more central than ever before. The rapidly increasing traffic has flooded Nørreport and countless adjustments and alterations have made the Nørreport site disappear. The last major renovation of Nørreport was the addition of the subway – a project that never surfaced. Nørreport is ready and overdue for new ideas. Nørreport is Copenhagen’s urban place par excellence.

Our project is a new interpretation and continuation of Nørreport’s history, as a connection and a meeting point. Our vision for Voldgaderne opens the axis along the old fortress – now a functional, natural and attractive connection across the town – with Nørreport as the natural centre of the axis. With the new Nørreport we (re-)create a continuous line and the connection between the fortifications in Ørsted Park, the Botanic Garden and the Royal Garden. With the new Nørreport we have chosen to prioritize the optimal conditions for all.

Our project gives priority to pedestrians, cyclists and rail passengers, tourists and guests, the employees while satisfying the requirements for buses and cars.
